As a part of the Bio-SMART program, all of our school departments are required to participate in the classroom in the Bio-SMART unit. As a part of this year's diabetes unit,
High Fructose Corn syrup is a sugar that is chemically made by corn.
AVID students grades 10-12 watched a documentary entitled King Corn in which two men decided to grow an acre of Corn and learn about the mass production of it. After watching the documentary, Students researched Corn production and how it relates to diabetes and created boards to demonstrate their information.
These boards were put against each other in a class competition where the best group presentations would win a $10 gift card to Cub foods where the students will go on a field trip to gather ingredients to make a meal and will then cook a meal together using absolutely no High Fructose Corn Syrup.
The winning boards were announced on Wednesday 12/16 and will be put on display in the school.
This is the Winning Project of the 11-12th grade class
Here is the winning project for grade 10.
If you remember last year's CSI Crime Scene unit, you should be excited to see what we have for this year's Diabetes unit.
So Far we have done some exciting things with learning about diabetes, but so far the most exciting was when about 300 students went out to the baseball and soccer field to create a World Diabetes Day Logo on November 12th 2009.
